Sear Bliss - a journey to Hades
(Pläkk Magazine 1998)

A human has always been interested in what will happen if one day his heart doesn't pump blood any more, his body becomes cold, blue and rigid and the heirs-at-law will get to quarreling about his tiny fortune around his lukewarm corpse. In brief: when he dies. Indeed, what will happen? We can't give an unique answer, because nobody has returned from THERE and spoken the TRUTH. Only FANTASIES remain. But human is curious. As it's impossible to find out the TRUTH about underworld, he is satisfied with even FANTASIES. The main source where he can obtain them is art with it's different expression forms that offers numerous preadventures of The Other Side. Sear Bliss offers his vision poured in music form. The Hungarian quintuplet has been on the scene since 1993, but the first LP was recorded two years ago. Last year they surprised us with one mini-CD and the current year rejoiced all death-friends with a new LP from Sear Bliss - "The Haunting". As all of the Pläkks editors after closer investigation turned out to be mortal, the interest arose on where do we move when the time is up. That's why the interview was done.

What do you know about Estonia?

Well, let me think... I’m afraid I don’t know too much about your country. I know that your capital town is Tallinn and as far as I know your country is surrounded by the Baltic Sea and the Finnish Bay. I’ve heard that the ship called Estonia sunk somewhere between Finland and Estonia and more than a thousand people died. I remember back then I saw in the television the depart of the ridiculous Russian army in your country right after it happened in Hungary. And a very important thing is that we are relatives, as the Estonian and Hungarian are related languages, as we belong to the Finno-Ugrian linguistic stock, so perhaps we were brothers two or three thousand years ago.

As I understood, you define yourself as a black metal band, although it is melodic. By which features do you place yourself into this category?

No, we never told that Sear Bliss is a black metal band. Usually people like categorizing the bands and it was always difficult to decide what kind of music Sear Bliss plays actually. You can find black metal elements in our music, so some people simply labelled us a black metal band, however I think it means something different than our music. I’m really into black metal and I believe I know the real meaning of it but Sear Bliss is a bit outside of its limits in my opinion. Anyway it’s up to the people to decide what it is we play actually and we don’t care if they think it’s black metal. Sear Bliss is a mixture of the ideas of five different personalities.

How important is to you determining your style exactly?

For us it’s not important at all. I never tried to define the style that Sear Bliss plays. The only thing that matters is music and if there’s a music that you like and enjoy really much, there’s no need to determine it. We play metal, that’s for sure but we put a lot of other things into it.

How do you explain your bands name? Has it a story or a legend behind it? Why did you choose just that name?

Well, the story is simple. I like poetry and I remember once I read a poem of Charles Baudelaire where I found the phrase "Sear Bliss" and I just thought it sounds so strange for a band name. At that time (and even now) I was sick of the so many usual and typical name that some new and upcoming bands used, so I decided to choose an unusual one for my band.

Your material is perfect for using it as a teaching material in some university, in borders of a course of lectures "Getting used to inevitability of death". Is it your purpose to announce the people with the help of your music that they all are mortals and will have to leave this world one day?

"Getting used to inevitability of death". What a great statement! It is one of the best approach I’ve heard of our music, really. Thank you very much for you compliments and these nice words. Do you really think this of our material? It seems you really caught the essence of the album, though some people misunderstood it. Our next album will be even much more threatening than ever before, I promise and as always, the negative aspects will influence us during the creation of those new songs. By the way we had no purposes with the mood of the album, we just played and recorded what we felt and if the people discover the essence of the mood we express through our music, that’s just great.

Is it done in purpose, that while listening to your record, a person starts to think about death and in brief he feels his nothingness in front of ENTIRETY?

No. Actually we have only one purpose when we write an album: to be able to create ourselves, to be straightforward in music. The mood of the result as a whole is a surprise sometimes even for us. However this is the fineness of it, when after an hour long wild improvisation you rehear interestedly what you created actually in that hour that seemed only two minutes for you because you’ve been somewhere else. There’s nothing more straightforward than this in my opinion.

What does death mean to you? Fate? Summary? Infinity? Inevitability? Punishment? Solution?

I think it’s not the final point. It is rather a station in the eternal cycle, however I believe we have one and only life. I don’t believe that we die and reborn in another body or that we have a soul that leaves our body and searches for a new one and will be born again in a form of some kind of animal for example. I hate christian theories that says we are above all. We are part of nature, just like any other animal or even tree. Mankind has the possibility to explore every piece of nature but it does not mean we have granted the right for destroying anything. So, I think there’s an eternal cycle in which each creation plays its role. Death is nothing compared to the enormous power of that cycle and... we are all part of it.

You are fascinated by themes such as eternity, the Other Side, stars... and death. Why do you like these "things"? Doesn't your present life offer you any equal dreams, pleasures, self realization opportunities on these unobtainable concepts?

As we are people we got our everyday pleasures and disappointments too like anybody has but I feel we know our limits and we dare only suppose what man would be able to do without these limits.

Tell me, can this whole album "The Haunting" be described with a word "yearning"? If yes, then for what?

Well, eventually you can describe this album with the word ‘yearning’, however don’t you think the whole earthly life is about yearning?! You are yearning for love, yearning for winter, yearning for death...etc. Actually anything you do is based on lack and that brings forth yearning. This band was born by yearning as well, even this album was brought forth by yearning and it is about yearning that way.

Regular death and black metal lyrics point somewhere out, I mean they express rage and hate on some object or phenomenon surrounding the author. But Sear Bliss music makes you look deeper inside, in order to feel better your being. Why don't you put your rage or hate into your music like most of the bands do? How do you relieve your pain for the world in case you have it of course?

I think we put all of our aggressions -positive and negative as well- into our music. The reason why we are not so direct is simple: we are this kind. We like making people feel that they are so small in front of the pure power of nature and that is not harm, as our origin is nature and we are part of it forever. But people always want to reign above all and are frustrated basically by anything that knows more, people can’t accept it. So mankind tries to reign or destroy.

The music of Sear Bliss is like ocean: placid and sometimes even melanholic waterfield changes suddenly into furious and violent murmurous gigantic waves and vice versa. Does this kind of instability express the characters and mental balance of the band members or does this kind of music sound simply cool and better? How deep inside is your music generated?

This album is a collective effort of five people. When you listen to "The Haunting" you got a piece from the moods, the feelings and thinking of the five members. Actually, Sear Bliss is the only thing on this Earth that we feel the same and think the same about. I like this ocean comparison really much, though I don’t think that ‘instability’ is the right word for that. You know, I think always everything changes and always everything is in changing, even now when I write these lines. The instability you mentioned, for me means the natural balance that applies for an ocean or even for one person.

Have all Sear Bliss members devoted themselves to only this band? How much does this band stuff take your time in a day? Which is more important: Sear Bliss or personal life? Or does the band mean to you something like a part of your personal life?

I don’t think it can be measured how much the band takes our time as we belong to the band from 0 - 24 hours. There exists no moment when I could say that the personal matter is more important than the band or the other way around as Sear Bliss became a part of our lives which is awesome and irreplaceable.

What is your bands motto, slogan which is important to you and you arrange your lives by that? What would be the message you'd like to sow all humanity with?

"We are standing in the gate of infinity
There is only one step for the cosmos
We have to decide between mortality and immortality
We should consider this decision
And we must learn from the destiny of the keepers of the gate
They have chosen mortality
And have been imprisoned in their frozen limits
We must not wait with this step
As the gate has started closing
And if we are late,
We’ll stay here forever
Between our cursed earthly bounds."
