(Tátrai Emese, Stiff and Cold 1996/5)

It was absolutely natural doing an interview with Hungarian Sear Bliss, because they astonished me with their outstanding, individual music. They've already received tongs of inquiring letters and hopefully they'll ge t a hundred times more. So read this conversation I made with bassist/vocalist András Nagy!!!!

You appeared quite "unexpectedly" in 1995, so I don't know much about the former story of the band... Tell me!

I formed Sear Bliss in 1993 in Szombathely. It was hard to find people to a music like this. That's why we had some line-up changes. We were rehearsing a lot at that time too, and we thought we are ready for recording a demo. This was in the beginning of 1995. Finally we went to Szombathely's LMS Studio in April, where we recorded four songs, on 24 tracks. I think the sound turned out very good. The tape's title is: The Pagan Winter and the following members played on the stuff: Zoltán Csejtei - vocals, Csaba Csejtei - guitar, János Barbarics - guitar, Winter - keyboards, Gergely Szûcs - trumpet and myself, András Nagy - bass. As we didn't have a drummer we had to work with a session member (Balázs Bertalan - ex-Extreme Deformity.) We would have wanted to astonish people with this stuff and I think it succeeded. We received many letters and good feedback. Maybe it's the result of that we tried to compose some strange and original music.

I rank your music among the very best ones. In what mood do you write it?

It's quite difficult to describe mood with music. We often feel emptiness, cold, frosty mood. We'll be trying to express this much better in the futre and I think it is presented more in the new tracks. There is more hate, aggression and pain in them. I always feel hate when I look around and see what lies we are living in!

What does paganism mean for you?

To be pagan is a very big inner freedom. But unfortunately it has been pushed into the background. The whole Europe could have been a wonderful land until Christians invaded here and by violence they wanted to make people believe they are living in a bad world. Up to that time the word "sin" didn't exist, but Christians taught us that everybody comes into the world as a sinner and we ahve to suffer for the acts that we didn't commit. There won't be justice in this world as long as priest get carte-blanche. And unfortunately people have forgotten their pagan past. That's why we give praise to mighty men like Vata. He tried to act against the Christian influence. I think Friedrich Nietzsche holds the most proper opinion about Christianity.

What do you think of Norwegian hordes? With which of them would you play live?

I like Norwegian bands a lot. I listen to almost only them. I'd play live with any of them. There isn't another place in the world where there are such great bands like Darkthrone, Emperor, Immortal, Satyricon etc... Beside all these I think Bathory is one of my biggest influences.

What's your view about legendary Hungarian Tormentor?

Tormentor did big things in those days and they shouldn't have given up their work. We can be proud that we had such a huge band when Black Metal had very few admirers at that time. Where were those bands then, who now say about themselves that they have been playing Black Metal for decades?!?

In what places do you feel well? What are your connections like with people around you?

I like being in forests or mountains. I like being at our rehearsal place with the rest of Sear Bliss. It's a private circle. I don't like being surrounded by many people, so I don't go to gigs or places of entertainment. I'm in connection with few people.

What are your biggest dreams?

I generally don't talk about my dreams. I try to be realistic about my future, plan things that can be carried out.

In your opinion is it a "good" or a "bad" thing that so many Black Metal bands appeared suddenly?

Neither good nor bad. As long as there are great bands like Satyricon, Arcturus, Marduk etc. .., there's no problem. But labels are releasing more and more ungifted crap now. Many trend-bands exist or they simply copy - for example - Norwegian bands. We also could copy Norwegian black metal, because it's a big influence on us, but instead of it we try to create something that characterizes us. Many bands miss originality, but those ones will die anyway. We want to compose Hungarian Black Metal, not Scandinavian!

Winter is your beloved season. How do you spend summers?

We don't really like summer, but we have things to do also then: more rehearsals, writing new songs etc...

What's the permanent line-up of Sear Bliss?

Zoltán Csejtei - drums/vocals, Csaba Csejtei - guitar, János Barbarics - guitar, Winter - keyboards, Gergely Szûcs - trumpet and myself, András Nagy - bass/vocals.

Thanx for the interview. Do you have a message?

Greetings to the readers! Listen to our music! Write! Emese, thank you for the interview!
