Just like Brecht's play of the same title, our production too is based on John Gay's "Beggars' Opera" (1728). Leaving the gist of the familiar story intact, but using Sear Bliss' extreme music which is alien to the theatre, we have made an attempt to merge theatre and one of the hardest styles of metal.

The story is about Captain Macheat, the gang leader, who marries Polly, the daughter of the immensely mean and vile "art dealer" Beköpy ("Squeals on him"), the king of organised crime. First, the captain is imprisoned thanks to the whores bribed by his wife, but he manages to get away with Lucy, the daughter of the corrupt, gangland-friendly superintendent Letsuky ("Locks him up"). Then, the captain is framed by his own mates, thanks to the manipulations of Beköpy. Even though Macheat is a criminal, he becomes a positive character in our eyes. Outcast from the world of real hotshots, Macheat "The Knife" turns into a romantic hero, with whom we can sympathise as his world is still a lot more human than the one replacing it. Similar to our age, everything in Macheat's world comes to be motivated by the race for goods and money, where people trample over anyone and anything.

As far as music is concerned, the play differs a lot from a conventional Sear Bliss concert. Naturally, there are songs which get to be played in their entirety, just like at a gig, but more often it is just a segment or a theme. Besides, sometimes our songs are accompanied by the actors' singing lines from the play. There are songs and fragments which were specifically written for this play and, therefore, can only be heard at the performance.

The target audience for this play, on the one hand, would be those people, especially youth, who are not real theatre-goers but who know Sear Bliss' music and can, therefore, accept and appreciate this piece whilst getting closer to theatre. On the other hand, we expect theatre-lovers, too, who, through this production, can get to know and, hopefully, befriend metal music.
